I Was a Single Mom Needing a Miracle… Read What Happened!

Spread the love

It was September of 1990, the Friday of Labor Day weekend. I’d been working part-time and living with my mom since my husband had left a year earlier. That week, though, God had miraculously opened up a full-time job, actually at the printing supply store that printed the album covers (cassette sleeves) of my first album. (That’s another miracle story which I’ll share in another blog;)

My mom loved being a grandma. She lovingly cared for my boys, Joshua 3, and Scott 4, while I worked part time. As a real estate agent, she worked her schedule around mine when I worked at a local music store. But with a full-time job I’d just been offered, I knew I’d need full-time child care to be able to take the much-needed position. And, with only a $4.50 an hour wage and sporadic and unreliable child support from my ex-husband, there was no way I could afford child care.

I needed a miracle… so I prayed.

Me and my little boys, Scott & Joshua, in 1990. God took care of us like orphans and widows.

I went to the Cookson Hills Head Start office that Friday to apply for Scott and Josh to attend their free preschool program. The lady in the office told me the sad reality: “There is a six-month waiting list to get one child into our program. So with two children, you’re looking at a twelve-month wait. I’m sorry, but we can’t help you right now.”

I had prayed all the way into the building, but left in tears, my hopes dashed by her words. I was crying silently and still praying under my breath as I walked down the hall to leave.

Just before I reached the exit, I heard a man’s voice call out to me from an open door to my left.

“Excuse me, ma’am? Can I help you?”

I wiped the tears from my face, took a deep breath, and walked into his office. He asked me what I needed, and I shared that I’d come in to apply to get my children in Head Start preschool, so that I could take the job I’d just been offered. He then told me that he was Jake Hargis, the Program Director of Head Start. He then said, “Call me Tuesday, since Monday is a holiday. I’ll see what I can do.”

I prayed all weekend! I knew it was a long shot, but I’d seen God do miracles so many other times, and particularly when it came to caring for my children since their dad left. I knew that He could make a way where there seemed no way!

Tuesday came, so I dialed the number of the Head Start office, voicing one more prayer as the phone rang.

The woman who’d turned me away four days earlier seemed stunned as she spoke.

“Somehow, we managed to get both of your children’s names on the enrollment list! Bring in a copy of their birth certificates and shot records, and they can start immediately.”

“Sing praises to God and to His name! Sing loud praises to Him who rides the clouds.  His name is the LORD— rejoice in His presence! Father to the fatherless, defender of widows— this is God, whose dwelling is holy.” Psalm 68:4-5    (Italics mine, for emphasis)

As a single mom with two young children, I needed God’s divine help just to live.

This is only one of many incredible things that the Lord did to take care of me and my little boys. After three years of single parenting, God sent me a new husband, Hank, who’d been a single parent for the previous three years, as well, to his three children. Hank and I just celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary three weeks ago. God is good, and so faithful. He is NEAR to the broken-hearted, so He’s been near to us along the way. He’s the best “husband” or “father” anyone can have.

Are you struggling today (or in the past) as a single parent, an orphan (perhaps an adult now), a widow or widower, or one who’s felt like such?  I urge you to surrender your life to Christ, the One Who LOVES you (and your children) more than anyone!  He delights in showering His children with blessings, even more than we want good things for our own children. I would love to pray for you, and read your comments and/or prayer requests in the comments section below.
